Widespread flight cancellations due to snow at JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports

Have plans to fly somewhere sunny on Saturday? Think again.

The winter storm has nearly shuttered the three major Metro New York airports on Saturday morning. As of 12:30 p.m., 2,085 flights into and out of Newark, LaGuardia and Kennedy airports had been canceled.

Newark Liberty International Airport is reporting that 609 flights had been canceled, about 89% of all outgoing flights and 78% of anticipated arrivals. By 9 a.m., 4.5 inches of snow had fallen at the airport. Also, the airport's AirTrain service were temporarily suspended, but shuttle buses are available.

LaGuardia Airport reports that 97% of its scheduled flights, or 556 flights, have been canceled due to the storm. By 9 a.m., the airport had 5.3 inches of snow.

John F. Kennedy International Airport had a total of 896 cancellations, about 80% of outgoing flights and 72% of incoming. By 9 a.m., 5.1 inches of snow had fallen at the airport.

Winds have registered 40 mph and above at the three airports, with LaGuardia highest at 46 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Airports are warning travelers to check with their airline to see if their flight is still scheduled to fly before heading out and allow extra travel time to the airport.

Logan International Airport in Boston, which was being hit hard by the storm, reported more than 600 cancellations, more than 90 percent of all flights.

Nationally, more than 3,500 flights were canceled as the snowstorm continues to pound the Northeast, according to FlightAware, which tracks air travel through the country.
