Why Jahmar Young Jr. will not transfer to play for Memphis basketball, Penny Hardaway

Jahmar Young Jr., who announced last week his intention to transfer to Memphis, will not suit up for the Tigers.

The SMU big man announced his change of plans Friday on Twitter.

"Due to personal reasons I will not be attending the University of Memphis this year," Young wrote.

The 6-foot-9 Young told The Commercial Appeal Friday the matter is related to academics.

Young was targeted in the transfer portal by the Tigers because of his size and experience. He was expected to provide depth at the center, a position at which Memphis is a little thin with Malcolm Dandridge and Kao Akobundu-Ehiogu.

The loss of Young gives the Tigers a scholarship back, leaving them with at least two available.

Memphis' fall semester begins Monday. The Tigers begin the season Nov. 7 at Vanderbilt.
