After Tokyo, where are the next Olympics? From Paris to LA, these cities will host games

As people across the world are watching the long-awaited Tokyo Olympics, some cities are excited for what future games will bring.

The International Olympic Committee already announced its plans for when and where future games will take place, and cities like Paris, Milan, Los Angeles and Beijing are expected to be hosts.

Financially, hosting the games isn't as glamorous as it may seem. According to a 2020 study, the average sports-related cost of hosting the Olympics is $12 billion, whereas non-sports-related costs can be several times that.

For this year's games, the Wall Street Journal reported a budget of $15.4 billion, but Japanese government auditors have said total spending tops $20 billion.

Hosting the games also comes with positives, including the ability for a country to show off its culture, increase tourism in the region and create a sense of national pride.

Here is a list of when and where some future Olympic games will happen, so mark your calendars.

2022 Winter Olympics: Beijing

The 2022 Winter Olympics are expected to take place in Beijing, China from Feb. 4-20, just a couple of months after the Tokyo games come to a close. The last time Beijing hosted the Olympics was in the summer of 2008. It will make history as the first city to host both the summer and winter Olympic games.

According to the Olympics, the games will feature new mixed teams in snowboarding, freestyle skiing, short-track speed skating and ski jumping. The design of the torch will be a similar design to the cauldron of the 2008 Olympic games, meant to honor the Olympic legacy in Beijing.

There will be 13 venues where the games will occur, split between three zones: Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.

Reuters reports that the IOC would like to have spectators at the event after the Tokyo games did not allow in-person fans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We want to have the opportunity for everybody to enjoy the hospitality and enjoy the great Chinese offers," Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr, who heads the IOC's coordination commission and is overseeing preparations for the Beijing Games, told Reuters.

2024 Summer Olympics: Paris

The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris, France from July 26 to Aug. 11. According to the official website for the Paris Olympics, new sports that will be introduced during these games includie breaking (also known as breakdancing) and sport climbing.

Beach volleyball will be played opposite the Eiffel Tower on the Champs de Mars, while fencing and Taekwondo will take place under the glass roof of the Grand Palais, according to the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Paris 2024 Board of Directors also approved a climate strategy for the upcoming games that will, in part, focus on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy within venues.

2026 Winter Olympics: Milan and Cortina, Italy

The 2026 Winter Olympics will take place in Italy's Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo from Feb. 6-22. According to National Public Radio, the last time that Italy held the Winter Games was in 2006, when Turin was the host. Cortina hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956.

The games are also meant to improve the attractiveness of the mountains as a place to live, according to the Olympics, as the Alpine macro-region faces depopulation.

Reuters reports the IOC has approved ski mountaineering for the games.

2028 Summer Olympics: Los Angeles

The 2028 Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles from July 21 to Aug. 6. Los Angeles is the third city, following London and Paris, to host three Olympic games. It hosted the games in 1932 and 1984.

The venues will range from downtown Los Angeles Sports Park, Valley Sports Park, South Bay Sports Park, Long Beach Sports Park and other arenas, Sporting News reports.

2032 Summer Olympics: Brisbane, Australia

The 2032 Summer Olympics will take place in Brisbane, Australia from July 23 to Aug. 8.

Brisbane was picked to host the games without any rival bids.

“We know what it takes to deliver a successful Games in Australia,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told International Olympic Committee members in an 11-minute live video link from his office.

Events will be hosted across Queensland, including the Gold Coast.
