Western, Monroeville win to set up FC showdown

Oct. 5—COLLINS — The rematch is set.

After Tuesday's three-set sweep over visiting South Central, the Western Reserve volleyball team will get a second chance at Monroeville — and first place in the Firelands Conference — on Thursday.

The Roughriders improved to 15-4 overall and 10-1 in the FC with scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17 over the Trojans (9-8, 6-5).

In the win, Jamie Muenz had 26 assists and served 17 points for Western, while Libby Weisenberger had 10 kills and Emma Hammond added five. Jordan Feaga served 15 points, while Payton Friend had 22 digs and Joslin Cain had 13.

Monroeville (15-3, 11-0) won the first meeting in three sets, but the first two sets went down to the wire in the 28-26, 27-25, 25-17 win.

Monroeville 3, Crestview 0

OLIVESBURG — The Division IV No. 14-ranked Eagles did their part with a three-set sweep over the host Cougars on Tuesday.

Monroeville posted scores of 25-11, 25-7 and 25-12.

Maddie Daniel had 15 kills and 14 digs for the Eagles, who also got 37 assists from Madi Clark along with 15 for 15 serving with four aces. Abbi Poths was 25 for 27 with an ace and added 10 digs, while Lilly White had 23 digs, and Alexa Adams was 8 for 8 serving with two aces.

Monroeville (14-3, 10-0) won the junior varsity match in two, 25-19, 25-6.

St. Paul 3, Mapleton 0

NORWALK — The Flyers snapped a four-match losing streak to improve to 9-9 overall and 8-3 in the FC following Tuesday's win over the Mounties.

St. Paul posted scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-10

Klaire Hickey served 18 points with two aces and had 14 digs for the Flyers, while Kristin Matlack served 11 points with four aces and had 31 assists. Also for St. Paul, Geralyn Mutchler had eight kills, while Kegney Stoll and Ella Wangler each had seven.

Wangler added 17 digs for St. Paul, which travels to South Central on Thursday.

After the match, a celebration was held for head coach Nancy Miller, who became the 10th coach in Ohio history to reach 600 wins on Sept. 27.

"The fact that all the people I got to see tonight, it was definitely special," Miller said. "We had former players come by and visit ... that right there is the best thing ever, to have them back in the gym.

"That to me is priceless. To be able to connect with them again, it's been awesome to watch the kids I've been able to coach grow into the people they are. There's not enough words for it."

New London 3, Plymouth 0

NEW LONDON — The Wildcats improved to 10-9 overall and 6-5 in the FC after Tuesday's home sweep over the Big Red.

New London won with scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-19.

Sasha Bowens finished with 10 kills and eight digs for the 'Cats, while Gracie Thomas had nine kills and served 13 points with four aces. Emilee Rowland had 15 assists and eight digs, while Pailee Wilson had nine kills and Jocelyn Speicher finished with 12 digs.

Willard 3, Port Clinton 0

WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes improved to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the SBC Bay with Tuesday's sweep over the visiting Redskins.

Willard posted scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-23.

Kelsey Linkins finished with 15 kills for the Flashes, while Makinley Schaffer added seven and both Natalie Slone and Cassie Hamons each had five. Hamons was 15 for 16 serving with three aces and had 35 assists and nine digs.

Also for the Flashes, Natalie Frye was 10 for 10 serving with three aces, and Syana Sivongsak had 12 digs.

"We were up 10 points in (the third set) and almost let it slip away, so it was good to be able to regroup and pull out the win in three," Willard coach Ashley Bond said. "Another bright spot was our serving percentage. The goal now is to keep getting better each game until the postseason begins."

Huron 3, Edison 0

MILAN — The Chargers fell in three to the Div. III No. 3-ranked Tigers in SBC Bay play Tuesday night.

Huron won 25-8, 25-20 and 25-13.

For Edison (5-12, 1-6), Kalli Quillen had 13 assists, while Karin Wlodarsky had five kills and seven digs. Jorja Byington, Oliva Wilson and Dana Preston each had three kills, and Natalie Leimeister added four assists and three points.

Edison is at Willard on Thursday.
