West Rusk leaves no doubt in 62-7 win

Sep. 18—This just in: West Rusk's machine hums just as well in true road games as it does at home.

The Raiders, rising up both the Dave Campbell's Texas Football and #bEASTTexas Fabulous 15 polls, showed why on Friday night, rolling over San Augustine on the road, a thorough 62-7 win that should throw a pretty good scare into the rest of District 9-3A, Division II. And West Rusk is already the defending district champion, having ran through the district in convincing fashion last year.

At San Augustine Friday night, West Rusk quarterback Andon Mata — last week's Chick-Fil-A Kilgore News Herald player of the week — submitted his application to win it again. "All" Mata did was throw for five touchdowns and 285 yards, as the Raiders had 575 yards of total offense.

On the receiving end, Geremiah Smith had three catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns; Will Jackson had three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown; Omarion Anthony had virtually the same stat line, with three catches for 71 yards and a score; and Ty Harper had a catch for 15 yards, but it also was a TD.

And the Raiders' running game was impressive, as well. Jamal Ford had two touchdowns; Tate Winings ran for exactly 100 yards and a score; and Noah Murphy had a touchdown to go with 73 yards. In addition, Calvin Mason had a fumble recovery for the Raiders.

They're 4-0 on the season, having beaten East Chambers to open the season in a neutral-site game at Jasper; back-to-back home wins over Sabine and Mineola; and then the beat-down of San Augustine Friday night.

The district schedule starts this coming Friday at home against Troup, whose Tigers are also 4-0, and look dangerous themselves: Troup's Tigers beat Brownsboro Friday night, 27-23, and have outscored their four opponents 150-87.
