'We're adding something new': Restaurant scene to grow with rooftop dining at Up on the Roof

A lofty Southern restaurant will soon open its third location in the Southeast when Up on the Roof arrives in Anderson's downtown, above the new parking garage at South McDuffie and East Market streets.

The restaurant chain already has rooftop eateries in Greenville and Alpharetta, Georgia. Anderson's location will open in early 2023, according to Stephanie Tobben, director of communications for the restaurant.

"We had already started to see great support to the Greenville location, so we knew there was excitement about it," Tobben said. "Anderson is a growing community. We're adding something new to the mix."

The menu specializes in small, sharable plates and seasonal Southern dishes, with locally sourced seasonal ingredients, as the menu expects to change with the weather.

Up on the Roof plans to have indoor and outdoor seating for a unique downtown dining experience.

"There's something magical about looking out over downtown Anderson from the rooftop," Wilson Oswald, CEO of UP on the Roof, said in an email. "Whether you're looking for the perfect brunch retreat with friends, want a romantic date night dinner spot, or are just ready to sit back and relax with a drink in hand, the sky's truly the limit at Up on the Roof."

'Downtown Anderson is home': How a city initiative has helped downtown evolve

The new restaurant will sit above a seven-level parking garage consisting of 305 parking spaces that spans 5,000 square feet of commercial space.

The top-floor kitchen and cocktail venue of Up on the Roof has long been a part of Anderson City Council's vision for a restaurant above the parking garage near Home2 Suites by Hilton hotels.

"It's exciting to see this vision become a reality," said David McCuen, city manager of Anderson. "Our council listened to the public and delivered a fantastic new place to gather, to eat and enjoy the view."

The new restaurant will be open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday, offering brunch on the weekends as well.
