"For this group of seniors, it's their last go around so they are going to leave it all out on the floor," Mayfield coach Keith Roberts sai

The Trojans improved to 4-1 in District 3-5A and will play Las Cruces on Tuesday.

"They are motivated, they have played (Las Cruces players Deuce Benjamin and Isaiah Carr) all of these years, not only in high school, but before then," Roberts said. "They want to get one against them. I'm really going to harp rivalry, school pride, they are in first, we are in second. Let's get this and tie for first early in the district."

The Knights (2-2 3-5A) led 40-21 in the second quarter and 40-26 at halftime as the Trojans had no answer for Knights forward Brandon Kehres in the post. Kehres scored eight of his 21 points in the first half.

But the Trojans turned up the pressure in the second half to get back into the game and limited Kehres to two points in the fourth.

"The game plan was to do our work early and get in (Kehres) way earlier in the possession," Roberts said. "That's what we did better in the second half and we sped them up in the full court."

The Trojans closed to 57-47 entering the fourth quarter. Six straight points from Cameron Sowards made it a three point game, a pair of free throws from Jalen Greene made it 57-5 with 4:53 left.

The Trojans took a 60-59 lead on an Ashtin Watson three-point play with 2:33 to play and Greene made a free throw to put the Trojans up 61-59. Watson forced a steal near midcourt and scored a lay up to put the Trojans up four with 53 seconds.

Despite the second half collapse, the Knights still had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, forced a turnover on an inbounds play with two seconds left, but Kehres's potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer didn't fall.

Mayfield was playing most of the game without leading scorer Davion Smith, who left the game in the first half after a collision near midcourt. Sowards had 32 points with for made 3s, AC Munoz had 11 points and Greene finished with 10 points.
