Weekend storm: Snow-related parking bans, closures and cancellations for the New Bedford area
NEW BEDFORD — A "powerful" winter storm is headed our way.
Southern New England will get hit with "a high impact winter storm" Saturday, the National Weather Service says. The storm could bring a foot or more of snow and blizzard conditions to the region, according to AccuWeather.
"A winter storm is expected on Saturday," the Weather Service says in a Hazardous Weather Outlook. "Heavy snow, strong winds, coastal flooding and dangerous seas are possible. Storm track and intensity will determine the exact impacts."
The "powerful coastal storm Friday night into Saturday night...will likely impact at least a portion of the region with heavy snow, strong winds, coastal flooding and dangerous seas," the Weather Service says. "However, still some uncertainty on the exact storm track and intensity, which will have a direct impact on snow amounts and other storm details."
Ahead of the storm, here are the parking bans, closures and cancellations related to the weather.
Parking bans
NEW BEDFORD: A citywide snow emergency parking ban will take effect at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, to allow City workers to efficiently remove snow from roadways and enable public safety vehicles and residents to travel safely. The parking ban will be strictly enforced and effective until lifted by City officials.
FAIRHAVEN: No vehicles shall be permitted to remain on the hydrant side of all streets in Fairhaven from Dec. 1 to March 31 from midnight to 8 a.m. and also during the time of any snowfall or snow removal operations. The Fairhaven Police Department will strictly enforce this Parking Ban. Violators will be towed and/or ticketed.
DARTMOUTH: Parking ban will be in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to noon on Sunday. No parking on the hydrant side. If no hydrants, park on even house numbered side.
Closures
Dartmouth transfer station and leaf/brush dropoff will be closed Saturday.
New Bedford Regional Airport will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 29, and potentially reopen on the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 30, as conditions permit. Passengers should contact their air carriers directly to confirm their flight status because widespread cancellations are expected.
The COVID-19 vaccine clinic provided by Seven Hills Behavioral Health at the Andrea McCoy Recreation Center at 181 Hillman St. has been canceled for Saturday.
The clinic at the Workers Community Center / Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores, 1534 Acushnet Ave., has been canceled for Sunday, Jan. 30. The clinic will take place the following Sunday, Feb. 6.
SRTA: Buses and transit services provided by the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority will not be operating Saturday, due to the storm. SRTA’s temporary suspension of demand response services on Sundays already was scheduled to begin this weekend, due to staffing shortages.
The Freetown Public Library and Transfer Station will be closed to the public on Saturday, Jan. 29.
