Weekend roundup: Bucs boys keep pace in O-K Red, Lakers win rivalry game at Fruitport

Grand Haven

Boys basketball: The Buccaneers moved into a tie atop the O-K Red with a 54-39 victory at East Kentwood on Saturday morning.

Nic Stump led all scorers with 16 points, with Bashir Neely (13) and Landon VanBeek (12) also scoring double figures for Grand Haven.

They'll host Caledonia on Tuesday night, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Girls basketball: Grand Haven played a tight second half against one of the state's top Division 1 teams on Saturday, dropping a 54-43 contest to East Kentwood.

"I thought we did a lot of things just as well as they did," Grand Haven coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer said. "It was much better than Thursday, but they've got a lot of very good players."

Zoe Spoelman scored 16 points for the Bucs, a season high. Molly Long had 10 points and Avery Keefe posted a team-high seven rebounds. The Bucs will search for a second win in conference play at Caledonia on Tuesday night.

Boys swim/dive: Grand Haven continued their strong dual meet performance with a home win against Rockford on Saturday afternoon. Wins in both the relays and individual events gave the Bucs a 189-125 victory.

Evan Kasbohm, Colin Kelly, Alec Korecki and Zander White were winners in the 200-yard freestyle relay by a second, while Miles Evink, Michael MacDonald, Thomas MacDonald and Kasbohm won the 400 freestyle relay by five seconds.

Kelly also won the 100 free and individual medley, while the MacDonald brothers combined for four individual event wins. Grand Haven will travel to West Ottawa on Thursday before a home meet against East Kentwood on Saturday.

Hockey: The Grand Haven/Spring Lake co-op team used two weekend victories to move to 7-2 on their season.

Playing back-to-back games for the second time this season, the Bucs had little trouble in a 7-1 win on Saturday against Grand Rapids Northview. Four goals from senior forward Braden Nielsen highlighted a strong day for the Buccaneer power play, with Gavin Cunningham, Dolan Smits and Mathieu VanLangevelde also adding Saturday goals.

On Sunday, Grand Haven were 5-2 winners at Jenison thanks to three third-period goals. Riley Buckingham and Mac Reeser helped seal the game with their goals early in the period, with Nielsen adding another pair of goals and Cunningham scoring midway through the second period.

Girls basketball: Spring Lake held Fruitport scoreless in the first and third quarters on their way to a 52-12 victory on Saturday night.

Meah Bajt led the Lakers with 13 points and six steals, with Jennifer Judge adding 10 points and four assists.

"We needed a game like this," Spring Lake coach Rich Hyde said. "We've been through a little bit of a gauntlet with the teams we played, and going toe to toe with a good Allendale team, but this was good for us."

Fruitport was led by Auebre Johnson with four points and Willo Staal with three points.

Spring Lake hosts Holland Christian on Tuesday, with the Trojans slated for a trip to Coopersville. Both games tip at 7 p.m.

Western Michigan Christian

Girls basketball: The Warriors were very happy with their Saturday performance against Whitehall, a dominant 60-32 victory that moved WMC to 6-1 overall.

"This game was our best performance of the year," WMC coach Jeremy Goorman said. "We were unselfish, beat them on the board and created turnovers. The girls bought into the game plan from beginning to end."

Taylor Folkema had 23 points and seven rebounds, with Maddie Wiersema scoring 14 points and Kyla Wiersema adding 10 points. WMC travels to Muskegon Heights on Tuesday before a home game against Kelloggsville on Wednesday.

Boys basketball: WMC played a Friday night game against Orchard View, losing a 79-61 contest. Owen Varnado scored 21 points for the Warriors, with Brekken Fairfield adding 15 points of his own.

"Orchard View has a very long and athletic team," WMC coach Kurt Gruppen said. "They were able to speed us up early and make us uncomfortable at times. Turnovers really hurt us and allowed them to get easy baskets."

The Warriors will host Muskegon Heights on Tuesday before a trip to Holton on Wednesday.

Fruitport Calvary Christian

A 20-point lead at halftime was plenty for FCC in a 75-40 victory at Holland Black River on Friday night.

Bradley Richards had a game-high 24 points with eight rebounds, Braden Cohea had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Braden Swanson added 14 points, while Jacob May turned in a strong game from the point guard position with 12 points, 10 assists and four steals.

FCC will host Kalamazoo Heritage on Tuesday before three straight road games.
