Week 6 games and predictions for Topeka-area high school football

Hayden is the last of the Topeka-area football teams to have an unblemished record at 5-0.

Last week, I went 6-2 in my picks. Here are the week six matchups and predictions.

  • Overall: 34-10

  • Week 1: 6-3

  • Week 2: 9-0

  • Week 3: 6-2

  • Week 4: 7-3

  • Week 5: 6-2

All games are scheduled for Friday night at 7 p.m.

Cair Paravel (2-3) vs. Madison (4-1)

Cair Paravel is three games in to a tough four-game slate, this week against another strong 8-man team in Madison led by dual threat quarterback Hayden Helm.

I think this slate of games is exactly what Cair Paravel needs to see the type of talent at the top of the 8-man game in KSHSAA play and will pay dividends down the road.

I've got Madison in a close one.

Predicton: Madison

Hayden (5-0) vs. Royal Valley (1-4)

Hayden will continue to roll at home this week against a one-win Royal Valley team.

Prediction: Hayden

Highland Park (4-1) at Atchison (5-0)

Highland Park finally ran into a team that had the game plan, and athletes, to outshoot them.

Coach Jermaine Monroe said recently they were going to use that game against Lincoln College Prep, a non-conference opponent, as a game to prepare for the postseason. A game against an unfamiliar opponent in a new venue.

This week, they're on the road again against another tough opponent and how this team responds to their first test of adversity this year will be telling.

I've got Highland Park bouncing back for the upset.

Prediction: Highland Park

Rossville (2-3) vs. Holton (4-1)

Rossville has shown growth week to week with a younger team this year, bouncing back from a week one loss to St. Marys with a win against Riley County.

In week three, they lost against Hayden and bounced back the following week to beat an undefeated Atchison team.

Facing a one loss-Holton team this week, and after falling to rival Silver Lake in OT last week, I've got Rossville bouncing back once again.

Prediction: Rossville

Seaman (3-1) at Leavenworth (2-3)

With an extra week of practice and rest under their belts, Seaman is back in action this week after a week five bye.

The focus for Seaman will have to be on a quarterback who's accounted for 13 touchdowns in three games, on the ground and in the air, as they look to get their passing attack on track in the later half of the regular season, too.

Prediction: Seaman

Shawnee Heights (3-2) at Wamego (5-0)

An undefeated Wamego team will be a great primer for a Shawnee Heights team wanting to make a postseason run.

After their rushing attack failed to generate a touchdown against De Soto, I expect that Shawnee Heights offense to right the ship with a big game this week.

Wamego's been impressive in its five wins thus far, but I don't know if they've faced a defense like Shawnee Heights yet.

Prediction: Shawnee Heights

Silver Lake (3-2) at Pleasant Ridge (2-3)

Silver Lake was a younger team this year, with a lot of players getting first time varsity reps.

A lot of those players grew up last Friday night in the War on 24 rivalry win, but as coach Logan Pegram said after that game, it's about how they build from here.

Pegram even said coming into that game that it had the chance to change the course of their season and I think that momentum carries into this week.

Prediction: Silver Lake

Topeka High (1-4) vs. Washburn Rural (3-2)

More:Washburn Rural football falls 24-6 to Junction City: 'We’ll keep playing. ... We’ll get better.'

Topeka High is simply overmatched against Washburn Rural.

Right now, Washburn Rural has too much experience and depth back for Topeka High to have an upset bit.

Prediction: Washburn Rural

Topeka West (0-5) at Turner (0-5)

Topeka West has looked better each week, said coach Russell Norton.

They're just looking for complementary football for four quarters, and I think they do so this week on the road against a winless Turner team to get Norton his first win as Topeka West's head coach.

Prediction: Topeka West
