Week 4 in review: RHAM’s Max Nylen scores eight TDs, Berlin gets a game-winner from Grimm

Berlin kicker Josh Grimm had missed a couple of extra points in past games, and he had an extra point blocked in Friday night’s game against Bloomfield.

But Grimm came up big when it counted. With 2 seconds left in a tie game, he lined up for a 35-yard field goal. Just as he was about to kick it, Bloomfield called a timeout. He went through with the kick half-heartedly and the ball missed the uprights.

“I heard the whistle, he heard the whistle, but I don’t think the rest of the line heard the whistle,” Berlin coach Joe Aresimowicz said. “They’re walking off and I’m like, ‘Guys, you’ve got a second chance.’”

The clock had run out but 2 seconds were put back on. This time Grimm was perfect and Berlin won, 37-34.

“I knew I could put it in,” Grimm said. “I was ready.”

Berlin remained unbeaten at 4-0.

“He kicked a 31-yarder over Platt. He’s got a really strong leg in my opinion, but he missed a couple of extra points and it was in his head,” Aresimowicz said. “All week long, he was working, working. [Friday], he was not only perfect, he was beyond perfect with the game winner.”

Here are some other top performances from Week 4:

Max Nylen, RHAM: The senior running back had a record-setting day, rushing for 372 yards and seven rushing touchdowns (you read that right) in a 63-39 win over Farmington on Saturday. He also had a receiving touchdown, an interception and seven tackles. Nylen’s eight total touchdowns are the most in school history and tied for third-most in state history.

Christian Benvenuto, Enfield: Benvenuto, the Enfield quarterback, completed 10 of 14 passes for 243 yards and three TDs in a 49-7 win over Bristol Central Thursday.

Zack Donovan, Stafford/East Windsor/Somers: Donovan completed 16 of 21 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns in Stafford’s 30-6 win over the Coventry/Windham Tech/Bolton/Lyman Memorial Thursday.

Paul Gorry, Sheehan: Gorry went 10 for 20 for 168 yards and four touchdown passes in a 47-6 win over Wilbur Cross.

Daniel Hernandez, SMSA: Hernandez had 304 of SMSA’s 373 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a 34-12 win over Ellington Friday.

Davien Kerr, Bloomfield: Kerr had eight catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-34 loss to Berlin.

Malachi Mapp, Rockville: Mapp had 10 tackles and 120 yards rushing in the Rams’ 32-0 win over the CREC co-op.

Will Migliaccio, Granby/Canton: Migliaccio threw five touchdown passes in a 41-0 win over the Windsor Locks co-op Friday night.

Gavin Mills, Stafford/East Windsor/Somers: Mills had eight receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns and also had seven tackles, as well as a sack and an interception on defense in the Stafford’s win over the Coventry co-op.

Julian Schneider, Conard: Schneider was 13 for 17 passing for 254 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-28 victory over East Hartford.

Chilli White, Windsor: White rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns against his former team, in Windsor’s 26-14 win over Middletown Thursday.

A much-needed milestone win and other historical stuff

— Stafford coach Brian Mazzone picked up his 50th career win Thursday night in a 30-6 victory over Coventry. Stafford won its first game over the CREC co-op 37-20 but lost to Granby/Canton 35-7 and North Branford 26-20 in overtime last week. It’s been a rough season for Stafford due to injuries.

“At the beginning of the season, I said this is the deepest team I’ve ever had,” Mazzone said. “We had 28 kids I thought were varsity players, and I think we’re down to 16 after injuries and whatnot. We have five two-way starters out for the season now. They’re key guys. They weren’t just guys.

“[Thursday] and the North Branford game, it was big for us that we battled and competed so long in that game. I didn’t know what we were going to get [Thursday] night. I was very happy with how we got things done.”

— Conard’s Trevor Tanis had a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown against East Hartford Friday; he is the first Conard player in 11 years to score a touchdown off an interception. Anthony Lugo was the last Conard player to do so, with a 35-yard return against Newington on Nov. 12, 2011.
