Wednesday's HS sports highlights: Garaway tops Sandy Valley 38-36 in IVC South overtime clash

Meghan Schwartz scored 15 points and Kenadi Yoder added 10 points and nine rebounds as visiting Garaway knocked off Sandy Valley 38-36 in overtime for an Inter-Valley Conference South Division girls basketball victory at Magnolia Wednesday night.

The Pirates (8-8, 5-4) led 11-8 after one quarter, 20-19 at the half and 29-27 after three quarters before the Cardinals evened things at 34-34 at the end of regulation. Garaway had a 4-2 edge in the extra session for the victory.

Abbey and Jordan Parker each scored 12 points to lead the Cardinals (11-5, 5-4), who had their Senior Night spoiled.

John Glenn 55, Dover 46

Mya Oliver tallied 15 points and Angela Kumler added 12 and visiting John Glenn pulled away down the stretch for a non-conference win over Dover.

The Little Muskies (11-5) led just 37-35 after three quarters of play, but extended their lead over the final eight minutes thanks to 10 of 14 shooting from the line.

John Glenn led 11-7 after one quarter and 30-18 at the half before Dover had a big third quarter and closes to within two points heading to the final frame.

Morgan Kiser led Dover (6-8) with 20 points and seven rebounds and Tori Jones added 14 points and four assists, while Taylor Luneborg collected eight rebounds.

The John Glenn JV team won 34-28. Morgan Karam led Dover with eight points.

Tusky Valley 38, Indian Valley 26

Ashley Merrick scored 15 points as host Tusky Valley recorded an IVC South win over Indian Valley to improve to 13-2 overall and maintain the division lead at 9-0.

Tusky Valley, who also got nine points from Kaleigh Norris and nine rebounds from Brook Stookey, led Indian Valley 7-4 after one quarter, 13-9 at the half and opened up a 32-16 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Ashton Doak led Indian Valley (1-14, 0-8) with 13 points. Taylor Spillman and Ellee Shepherd chipped in with four points each. Madison Monte led the Braves with five rebounds.

The TV JV team won 27-26 as Ella McElwee made two free throws with less than four seconds to give the Trojans the lead.

Central Catholic 58, Newcomerstown 21

Junior guards Reese Triplett and Maddie Ferrell combined for 37 points as Tuscarawas Central Catholic rolled to a 58-21 IVC North victory at Newcomerstown.

Triplett poured in a game high 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Ferrell converted two threes and finished with 16 markers. Gina Sciarretti added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the winners while Cassidy Green chipped in six points.

With the victory, Central improves to 11-3 and 8-1 in the IVC North.

The Saints led 18-2 after one stanza, 34-8 at the half and 48-18 after three.

Ashley Lahmers and Zoe Mathews led the Trojans with 10 points apiece.

Due to scheduling, cancelations and postponements, the Saints have played seven straight games on the road. They have not played a home game since Dec. 15, but will host Crooksville on Monday night.

Fairless 42, Orrville 21

Grace Lyon scored 12 points to lead Fairless to its ninth win of the season after a Principals Athletic Conference decision over visiting Orrville.

Zoey Steele added nine points for the winners, while Gracie Ashton added eight and Kam Kondrach put in seven.

Marlington 65, Carrollton 15

Host Marlington defeated Carrollton in Eastern Buckeye Conference action.

Swimming

New Phila vs. Tri-Valley

Host New Philadelphia split with Tri-Valley in the Tuscarawas County pool.

The NP boys were 66-65 winners, while the Tri-Valley girls won 96-68.

Bowling

Sandy Valley vs. Central Catholic

Host Sandy Valley swept Tuscarawas Central Catholic at Carroll Lanes.

The Sandy Valley girls won 2,287-2,008 as Miah Delaney rolled a 449 series (251-198) and Joey Boyer bowled a 334 (162-172).

Marisha Gonzalez led Central Catholic with a 329 (204-125) and Madeline Rothrock followed with a 301 (157-144).

The Sandy Valley boys were 1,911-1,415 winners as they posted their second win of the season with a hard fought battle against TCC. Trailing the whole match, they entered the last baker game down 57 pins. They outscored TCC by 80 pins the last game, securing the win by 23 pins.

Alonzo Peche posted a 290 (131-159) and Jaden Capillo followed with a 280 (157-128).

Aaron Mercier led Central Catholic with a 348 (172-176) and Marcus Clemence added a 318 (130-188).

Rootstown Rover

The Carrollton boys and girls varsity bowling teams were champions of the Rootstown Rover Sectional Preview Tournament held on Sunday at Spins Lanes in Kent.

The top overall girl bowler was Tara Oberlin with a 629 series and the top overall male bowler was Bryce Taylor with a 704 series. The top high game for the girls was Zoey Elliott with a 252.

Wrestling

New Phila 54, Claymont 30

Visiting New Philadelphia picked up a dual meet win at Claymont.

Malvern 54, Harrison Central 21

The visiting Hornets defeated the Huskies to improve their dual record to 7-0.

Coshocton Triangular

Host Coshocto defeated Crooksville 36-22 and topped Morgan 36-21 in Muskingum Valley League Small School Division matches.

River View Triangular

River View split a triangular as it defeated Maysville 46-24, but fell to Philo 47-24.
