WC girls beat NK

Sep. 26—BICKNELL — The Washington Catholic Lady Cardinals soccer team (5-4-2) picked up a dominant victory over the weekend. The Lady Cards defeated the North Knox Lady Warriors 8-1 to pick up another conference victory. The Lady Cardinals finished with a 3-1 record in the Blue Chip Conference.

The Lady Cardinals dominated play and possession from the opening whistle with shots quickly accumulating. WC saw a barrage of shots on goal coming from seniors Mya Cline, Ella Grissom, Brynna Hunter, and Maritza Villagran, as well as junior Rosie Serrano. The Lady Cardinals would first strike from a cross into the box that freshman Angela Santiago blasted into the net. Minutes later, Cline carried the ball through the Lady Warrior defense and finish a shot passed the keeper for the 2-0 lead. The attack continued with shots continuing to pepper the Lady Warrior net. A corner kick from Serrano found the left foot of freshman Mariana Becerra to increase the lead to 3-0. Cline continued a strong attack of her own as she finished the first half with more attacking runs through the back line of the defense, resulting in two more scores and a first half hat trick.

The Lady Warriors had no quit in them and found the occasional dangerous counterattack in the first half, testing WC goalkeeper Addie Talbert. A strong strike from 25-yards by the Lady Warriors found its way passed the fingertips of Talbert and gave North Knox their loan goal of the day just before halftime.

"We had a very strong showing from the beginning today," WC Coach Austin Deem said. "We are working on the improving the little things, like first touch and communicating better. I think we did a better job of that today," Deem continued.

Second half of play was similar to the first half action as WC's Grissom, Cline, and Santiago continued to attack the North Knox net. The Lady Cardinals also got contributions on the attack from senior Chloe Garland, junior Grace Drew, sophomores Paige Leischner, Kayleen Arriaza, and freshmen Addie Babrick and Lexi Gootee. The first score of the second half was a result of a quick counterattack by Cline in the attacking third of the field as she blasted in her fourth and final score of the night and set the score at 6-0. Rosie Serrano was next up in the WC scoring column as she gathered a loose ball from 20-yards out and knocked in a left-footed blast in the upper right corner. The Lady Cardinals attack continued to stay hot, but would finish the scoring on a solo attack. Senior Brynna Hunter intercepted a pass in the WC midfield and cut her way up the field. Hunter connected on a shot from just inside the penalty box to finalize the score 8-1.

The Lady Cardinals will complete their season on Wednesday in Tell City before facing White River Valley in the opening round of Sectional 47.
