Watterson's Nick Maliwesky named Columbus area high school athlete of the week

In a vote that ended Dec. 9, Dispatch.com readers selected the Athlete of the Week for competitions that took place from before Dec. 4.

The winner is Watterson bowler Nick Maliwesky.

Maliwesky bowled a 226 and 238 against West, then a 244 and 208 against Teays Valley. He is No. 1 in central Ohio with a 229 average.

Maliwesky received 47.3% of the vote and was followed by Hilliard Darby basketball player Cam Gilkerson, who got 20.5% of the vote, Big Walnut bowler Nick Green (9.5%), Olentangy Orange basketball player Mikey McCollum (8.53%), Olentangy Berlin basketball player Derek Goodman (8.5%) and Upper Arlington swimmer Grant Gooding (4%).

Gilkerson averaged 19 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3 assists in wins over Canal Winchester, Marysville and Groveport.

Green bowled a two-game series of 466 in a 2,198-2,189 win over Delaware Hayes and is No. 1 in the OCC with a 233 average.

McCollum scored 17 points in a 68-46 win over St. Charles and 21 points in a 66-53 win over Hilliard Davidson.

Goodman scored 18 points in a 69-69 win over Caledonia River Valley and 15 points in a 62-57 win over Olentangy.

Gooding won the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM in the Ned Reeb Invitational. In the 100 breaststroke, he won in 54.9, .53 of a second off his state championship time of a year ago. In the 200 IM, his time of 1:50.87 was 3.35 seconds over the second-place finisher.

Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week.

Anyone can nominate an athlete through Twitter tagging @BrianWhite13 or by email to bwhite1@dispatch.com.

Once athletes win during the regular season, they're not eligible to be back on the ballot until the postseason. Athletes who have not been a recipient of one of the weekly awards can be nominated more than once.
