Groundhog Day follows Phil (Bill Murray), a weatherman covering the annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as he gets caught in a time loop and is forced to relive the same day, February 2, over and over. Throughout the film, Phil gradually goes from realizing he’s in a time loop and wreaking havoc to attempting to perform good deeds in the town, all with the intent of winning over Rita (Andie MacDowell). Eventually, so much time passes within the loop that Phil is able to learn new skills, help the townspeople, and catch Rita’s eye.

Groundhog Day was released on Groundhog Day in 1993 and has been somewhat synonymous with the holiday since.
