Former Manual High School star track and field and cross country runner Yared Nuguse set the American record for the men's indoor mile at the 115th Millrose Games on Saturday.

Nuguse came in first for the mile at the games, completing the race in 3:47.38 at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. That time puts him second for the world record behind Yomif Kejelcha, who ran the mile in 3:47.01 in 2019.

The feat comes only about two weeks after Nuguse set a new U.S. record for the indoor 3,000-meter run at the Boston University Terrier Classic, running the 3,000 in 7:28.24. The time shattered a 10-year-old record held by Galen Rupp (7:30.16) by nearly two full seconds and is the fastest time in the event, indoors or outdoors.

“I know I was able to run like, really fast,” Nuguse said in an interview tweeted by World Athletics. “But ya know, to go that quick is still, ya know, a little surprising.”

Tim Holman, track coach at duPont, also tweeted about the race, calling Nuguse a “great representative for America, Kentucky, and duPont Manual High School.”

“Couldn’t be prouder of this guy,” he wrote.

Nuguse won the Boston University race by more than three seconds, beating Sam Atkin's 7:31.97.

"I didn't really come in thinking, 'I'm gonna break the record, I'm gonna break the record,'" Nuguse told Citius Mag after. "It just kinda happened."

Nuguse stared at Manual, where he earned athlete of the year honors in cross country and track and field from The Courier Journal before going on to shine at Notre Dame. There he won an NCAA title in the 1,500 in 2019 and defended the title in 2021, where he set an NCAA-record time of 3:34.36, an Olympic standard time. He qualified for the Olympics in Japan but did not make the trip due to a hamstring injury.

On Feb. 12, 2022, on the same BU track, Nuguse broke the NCAA indoor 3,000 record with a 7:38.13. Nearly a year later, he's now the U.S. record-holder.
