When actor and comedian Chevy Chase showed up for a quick bite to eat at Raising Cane’s on the coast of South Carolina, no one expected him to start serving up dishes.
But that’s what happened.
The star of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” stopped by Cane’s at 225 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston around noon on Dec. 2, company officials told McClatchy News. Chase stayed for about an hour and ordered one of the fast food restaurant’s most popular menu items: the box combo, which comes with four chicken fingers, crinkle cut fries, Cane’s sauce, Texas Toast, coleslaw and a drink.
Customers often substitute the coleslaw for another side — but not Chase, Raising Cane’s said.
Chase isn’t the first celebrity to make an appearance at the Louisiana-based fast food restaurant. Rapper Snoop Dogg was featured in Cane’s inaugural episode of a Drive-Thru Comedy series that aired Nov. 12 in which he surprised customers in the drive-thru.
But the company said Chase’s visit wasn’t part of the YouTube series.
According to officials, the actor came to eat and was “just having some fun” when he decided to don the Cane’s hat and headset to serve customers.
“In true Chevy Chase form, he asked to jump behind the counter and hilarity ensued as he served up their orders in the drive-thru and inside at the counter,” Cane’s said.
Chase didn’t post details about the visit on social media, but he was in North Charleston for a Dec. 1 screening celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” WCBD reported.
An eight-second video on TikTok showed Chase bobbing his head in the drive-thru window with a Cane’s cup in his hand. The caption read, “When you go to Cane’s and.... Clark Griswold is working the drive-thru.”
