Set to appear in the World Series for the first time, the Washington Nationals made franchise history and the team’s ace is feeling loose.

Before Friday night’s game between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers, the home team hosted its baseball counterpart and welcomed Max Scherzer to centre ice for the ceremonial puck drop. But instead of vulcanized rubber, the pitcher dropped a baseball.

Despite the unexpected switch, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin had fun with it and showed off some stick skills.

The Nationals’ ace has unquestionably been one of the best MLB pitchers for years now, boasting a 3.20 ERA and 2,692 strikeouts over his 12-year career.

As he made his way onto the ice, Scherzer had a little slip, but luckily for Nats fans, was able to stay on his feet.

If the Nationals win the World Series and celebrate like the Capitals did, the potential for future slip-ups is high.

The Caps hold a 4-2-2 record heading into the squad’s game against the Rangers and sit third in the Metropolitan division.
