Wapello boys trim 22 strokes, finish seventh in state golf meet

Wapello High School's boys golf team improved by 22 strokes on the second day of the Class 1A state tournament at Ames Golf and Country Club and moved up to seventh place in the team standings.

Lake Mills won the state championship with a 36-hole total of 678. East Buchanan moved up a notch to second place with a 689 and was followed by Akron-Westfield (700), North Butler (727), English Valleys (727), Fremont-Mills (744), Wapello (760) and Don Bosco (783).

Bennett Berger of Lake Mills was medalist with an eight-over par 76-74—150.

Wapello carded a 391 on Monday and a 369 on Tuesday. Cooper Garrison led Wapello with a 91-89—180. He tied for 22nd individually among 56 golfers. Completing Wapello's team score were Casey Short (94-95—189), Zach Harbison (100-92—192) and Dawson Tipps (106-93—199).

Also playing for Wapello were Matthew McGowan (103-97—200) and Codder Malcolm (100-101—201).

GIRLS SOCCER

NO. 8 MOUNT VERNON 10, BURLINGTON 0: Eighth-ranked Mount Vernon ousted Burlington in the Class 2A, Region 8 semifinal match at Mount Vernon.

It was Mount Vernon's 17th straight victory.

Mount Vernon (17-1) advances to the regional finals Thursday against North Scott (11-5-1). That winner advances to next week's state tournament.

Burlington ended its season at 11-6.

NO. 7 NORTH SCOTT 3, ND-WB/D 0: The Lady Lancers ousted Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville in the Class 2A, Region 8 semifinals at Eldridge.

North Scott (11-5-1) faces No. 8 Mount Vernon (17-1) Thursday for the regional championship.

North Scott took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the match and the score remained at that through halftime. Early in the second half, ND-WB/D had an opportunity to tie the match. Amelia Schwenker beat a couple defenders and hit a cross to Lexi Mears, but Mears' shot sailed just over the goal.

The Lancers scored twice more late in the match.

The Nikes had seven shots, one on goal. Goalkeeper Ava Rashid had 15 saves "while also coming off her line to stop several attacks," coach Todd Ackerman said. Rashid "had an outstanding game in goal," Ackerman said.

The Nikes bowed out at 9-8.

CLEAR CREEK-AMANA 1, FORT MADISON 0: Regulation play and two overtimes couldn't solve anything, so the Class 2A, Region 7 semifinal match went to penalty kicks at Clear Creek.

The Clippers beat Fort Madison 4-2 in the PKs for a 1-0 match victory.

Fort Madison was limited to two shots on goal, both by Teagan Snaadt. Goalkeeper Taylor Johnson had 24 saves.

Clear Creek-Amana (10-7) advances to the regional championship match Thursday against Xavier (11-3) at Cedar Rapids.

Fort Madison finished at 12-4.

NO. 1 ASSUMPTION 11, MEDIAPOLIS 0: Top ranked Assumption scored all its goals in the first half and ousted the Bullettes in the Class 1A, Region 8 semifinals at Davenport.

The Knights (13-4) will host Dubuque Wahlert (7-10) Thursday for the regional championship and a berth in next week's state tournament.

Mediapolis bowed out at 7-9.

PREP BASEBALL

BETTENDORF 8, BURLINGTON 6: Casey Krager and Bradon Roome had two hits each to lead the Bulldogs past Burlington at Bettendorf.

Brock Dengler led Burlington with a double, a single, two RBIs and a run scored in three times at bat. Mateo Rascon hit a solo home run for the Grayhounds. Kyler Schwartz was the losing pitcher, giving up four earned runs on three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out three.

Burlington (0-2) hosts Pleasant Valley Thursday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Community Field. Bettendorf improved to 3-1.

DANVILLE 6, CENTRAL LEE 3: Freshman Jaden Bauer went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Bears to a South Division win at Donnellson.

Ethan Unzicker went 2-for-4 and scored twice for Danville. Bauer was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs, neither earned, on three hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out seven.

Kayden Calfee went 2-for-2 for Central Lee and Zach Manwill doubled.

L-M 15, W-MU/C 9: Louisa-Muscatine banged out 12 hits in a North Division win over Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus at Winfield.

L-M's Ty Northup went 3-for-3 and Bryar Runnells, Xander Bieri and Max Volki each had two hits. For the Wolves, Andrew Brown, Nick Crow and Cole Milks had two hits each. Brown tripled.

PREP SOFTBALL

NO. 5 WB-ND 2-9, FORT MADISON 0-0: Fifth-ranked (Class 3A) West Burlington-Notre Dame picked up two shutout victories at Fort Madison.

Lauren Summers pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game. She walked one and struck out seven in seven innings. Summers, Lauren Krieger, Anna Engberg and Madalynn Knapp each had a hit for WB-ND. Fort Madison's hits came from Emily Steffensmeier, Lauren Helmick and Gabrielle Ruble.

The second game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to rain. Summers went 3-for-3 for WB-ND. Elise Oleson and Lindsey Kelley each had two hits. Madeline Thomas pitched the shutout win, giving up two hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out six. Helmick and Elizabeth Tanner each had a hit for the Bloodhounds.

WB-ND (3-0) hosts Highland Wednesday. Fort Madison hosts Davenport North in a doubleheader Saturday.

KEOKUK 9, MID-PRAIRIE 2: The Chiefs opened their season with a non-conference win at Wellman.

Rachel Moore led the Keokuk attack with three hits and two RBIs in four trips to the plate. Avery Land and Gracie Thompson both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Ada Wood was the winning pitcher, striking out 13 in six innings.

Keokuk opens the Southeast Conference schedule Tuesday, hosting Fairfield in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader.W

COLUMBUS 14, LONE TREE 4: Lily Coil was the winning pitcher and had a triple, two doubles, two runs scored and five RBIs in four at bats to lead the Wildcats past Lone Tree in a North Division game at Columbus Junction.

Jocelyn Fulton went 4-for-4 with two doubles for Columbus. Sara Vela and Lecet Quiroz both had two hits. Quiroz doubled. Vela and Quiroz had two RBIs each.

The Wildcats scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the 10-run lead, ending the game.

NO. 12 L-M 10, W-MU 8: No. 12 ranked (Class 2A) Louisa-Muscatine edged past Winfield-Mount Uhion in a North Division game at Winfield.

Kenzie Kissell was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored three runs. Brynn Jeambey, McKenna Hohenadel, Morgan Stecher and Hannah Kissell each had two hits for the FalconsJeambey knocked in three runs, while Stecher drove in two. Hohenadel and Jersey Lessenger each scored a pair of runs.

Jobey Malone and Melina Oepping each had two hits for W-MU, now 1-1. Louisa-Muscatine improved to 2-0.

CENTRAL LEE 10, DANVILLE 0: Makenzie Morris had a single for the Bears in a South Division game which went five innings.

Kenna Sandoval, Meghan Hopp and Shanna Buford each had two hits for the Lady Hawks. Sandoval and Hopp each scorted two runs. Sandoval drove in three runs, while Buford drobve in a pair. Bailey Schwartz score
