What is the 'I wanna go home' TikTok song, and where does it come from?

If you’ve been on TikTok recently, you have probably heard the “I wanna go home” sound used in various viral videos.

The “I wanna go homeTikTok sound is versatile. The song’s tone is perfect background music for any awkward or inconvenient situation, such as getting scammed by a third-party hotel booking website or working as waitstaff for a 91-customer reservation.

What is inflation and what causes it?

Another example of the sound is in this viral video posted by TikToker Tivona, who used the song to describe her true feelings after a friend tells her that “the night’s just getting started” at 10 p.m.

“I’m tryna hit the sheets, not the streets,” Tivona wrote in the video’s caption.

“Like babe, it’s already past my bedtime,” a TikToker commented.

The origin of the “I wanna go home” song

According to Know Your Meme, the “I wanna go home” song originates from a Nigerian children’s gospel group, Destined Kids. The viral TikTok sound is a snippet from Destined Kids’ song, “It’s a Holiday.” Around the 18-second mark, one of the young singers in the video sings the famous line, as she wants to go home for the holidays to spend time with her parents.

TikToker Esosa found the perfect opportunity to take the snippet out of context and turn it into a viral meme. Esosa first posted the sound onto TikTok in early May, beginning the sound’s popular meme format.

The song snippet amused TikTokers who grew up watching Destined Kids’ videos; many took to the comments to express their nostalgia.

“This sound just dug up a very deep memory,” a TikToker commented.

“I remember having all the volumes,” another chimed in.

Reasons why TikTokers just want to go home

TikTokers keep coming up with more fun ways to use the “I wanna go home” song.

This video posted by TikToker Aceeca Don displays a very awkward date experience, leading to a fitting use of the song. Don describes that her date invited her to his house to watch a movie — on a very unusual (and concerning) screen setup.

Viewers found Don's date's makeshift TV hilarious.

“Netflix and chill on a budget I guess,” a TikToker joked.

“Not even a laptop, DAYUM,” someone added.

TikTok user Laura Vega also shared this video to make clever use of the sound to express the difficulty of maintaining a work-life balance while working remotely.

Other TikTokers related to Vega’s working pains.

“I felt this. And everyone says you’re already home though… but still, I wanna go home,” a TikTok user said.

“The amount of self-discipline it takes to work from home is insane. Ya girl out here struggling LOL,” another chimed in.
