“My favorite statement that any of our citizens have ever said to me, they said to me, ‘Hey mayor you’ve done some good things but if you can just bring a Whataburger here, you will go down in the mayor’s hall of fame,’” Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite said in October at the store groundbreaking.
The company is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, with more than 850 locations across 14 states. The Southaven locations are the first of four Whataburgers planned in the Memphis area. Two others are set to open in Memphis and Cordova.
“We’re thrilled to introduce Whataburger’s big flavors, fresh ingredients and original recipes to Memphis,” Whataburger Senior Market Leader Jon Barideaux said in a news release. “We look forward to serving our new friends and neighbors in Southaven soon.”
The Memphis area used to be home to two Whataburger locations, one in Whitehaven and one in Frayser, but both closed by the early '90s.
Whataburger plans to employ a total of 525 employees in the Memphis area by year-end, the news release said.
