Helicopter filming Spanish cycling race led police to seize 40 cannabis plants in Catalonia

A helicopter filming a cycling race in Spain on Saturday accidentally led police to a major cannabis raid.

The Vuelta a Espana — a multi-stage cycling race throughout Spain each year — was on its eighth leg on Saturday, wrapping up in Igualada, Catalonia. As a helicopter was tracking riders through the final kilometers of the race, it panned out to show riders racing through city streets that were lined with apartment buildings.

One of those apartment buildings, however, had dozens of marijuana plants growing on the roof.

Thanks to those images, Catalonian police, or the Mossos, made a move to seize the plants. They have yet to make an arrest in the case.

“We received information thanks to the images that individuals posted on social media that had been taken from the helicopter of La Vuelta,” a Mossos spokesperson told ESPN. “That has helped us to seize 40 marijuana plants. No one has been arrested, but the investigation is still ongoing to find those responsible.”

Recreational marijuana is not legal in Spain like it is in parts of the United States, however it is legal to grow marijuana for personal use. The law, according to ESPN, does not specify how large a home plantation is allowed to be.

Apparently, though, 40 plants is beyond that threshold.
