Voters in Athens-Clarke, Oconee decide on board of education seats

Election Day in Oconee County ended Tuesday with a runoff for the Post 3 seat on the school board between Julie Mauck and Ryan Hammock.

The seat was the only contested board of education race on the Oconee ballot, while in Athens-Clarke County, the election featured three contested school board seats. In District 9, Mark Evans bested Elder Johnson IV. In District 5, Tim Denson cruised past Deston Bernard Anderson.

A final tally in Athens-Clarke's District 1 between James Alexander and Heidi Hensley was not complete late Tuesday as one precinct remained uncounted. Hensley was leading Alexander, but elections officials said results from the final precinct would not be available until sometime Wednesday.

In the Oconee race, neither Mauck nor Hammock had the 50 percent necessary to avoid a runoff set for June 21.
