Vote for the high school athlete of the week in Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County

After a break for the holidays and snow, the athlete of the week poll is back with the first one of 2022.

The athlete of the week poll is normally posted every Monday and winners are announced on Wednesday. Readers vote for the winner in the poll below.

If you'd like to nominate someone for athlete of the week, do so by sending the nominations to phite@newsleader.com by noon Sunday. Include the player's name, year in school, and accomplishments for the week. Final nominees every week will be chosen by The News Leader staff.

The nominees and their accomplishments are listed below and the poll where you can vote is below that.

This week's nominees:

Finn Irving, Wilson Memorial basketball: Irving scored 61 points, 33 rebounds and 10 steals in three games last week.

Kirby Ransom, Fort Defiance basketball: Ransome finished the week with 32 points in a pair of Fort Defiance wins.

Charles Haynes, Waynesboro basketball: Haynes had 41 points in two games last week, including 21 in a big win over Fort Defiance Friday.

Aurora Schwaner, Staunton indoor track: Schwaner competed in the East Coast Elite Meet, placing first in triple jump and second in long jump. She is qualified for the state meet in both jumps.

Alec McLaren, Fort Defiance wrestling: McLaren won the most valuable wrestler award at the Bison Invitational Saturday, taking the 145-pound title and helping lead Fort to a team victory.

Brooke Cason, Wilson Memorial basketball: Cason had 55 points, 21 rebounds and 29 blocks in three games last week.
