The high school winter season is underway for Greater Fall River teams.

Every week during the school year The Herald News will hold a vote for the Player of the Week.

Joseph Case’s Liberty Gazaille won the Basketball Player of the Week honors for Jan. 3-9. Gazaille, who had a double, double game against Westport, collected 41% percent of the vote to take first place.

Diman’s Emma Mederios finished second (27%), followed by Westport’s Domanick Vitorino (11%).

Durfee swimmer Emma McDonnell won the other Player of the Week poll, gathering 37% to take first place. Teammate Abby Long placed second (33%) and Somerset Berkley hockey player Mason Sullivan took third (11%).

This poll, which ends on Jan. 21, involves basketball, hockey, swimming and indoor track.

Here are The Herald News nominees for the week of Jan.10-16:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Landon Cayton, Case

Cayton had a team-high 20 points against Apponequet. He also scored 26 against Diman.

Ethan Dias, Somerset Berkley

Dias finished with a team-high 24 points and 11 rebounds in an overtime win against Farhaven.

Mason Medeiros, Somerset Berkley

Medeiros hit a three-pointer as time expired to tie the game and force overtime against Fairhaven.

Frank Vollaro, Stang

Vollaro finished with 16 points and nine rebounds against Cardinal Spellman.

Hunter Quental, Diman

Quental knocked down a three-pointer as time expired to lead the Bengals to their first victory of the season over Bristol-Plymouth.

Hayden Cayton, Case

Cayton had a big game against Diman, scoring a game-high 28 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds.

Jacob Furtado, Diman

Furtado had a team-high 18 points against Case.

Owen Boudria, Westport

Boudria led a balanced scoring attack with a team-high 13 points against Fairhaven.

Jahmier Stephenson, Connolly

Stephenson had a team-high 15 points against Dighton-Rehoboth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Korynne Holden, Westport

Holden finished with 21 points, three steals and three rebounds in a win against Greater New Bedford.

Mackenzie Carreiro, Durfee

Carreiro netted a game-high 19 points in a win over Tolman.

Gabriella Nugent, Somerset Berkley

Nugent finished with a team-high 17 points in a win against Fairhaven.

Brooke Orton, Case

Orton ended with 20 points, four steals, and four assists in a win against Greater New Bedford.

Kate Carreau, Stang

Carreau had a team-high 14 points in a win against Cardinal Spellman.

Bridget Markey, Stang

Markey led the way for Stang with 15 points against Archbishop Williams.

Emma Mederios, Diman

Mederios recorded a game-high 23 points against Blue Hills, including 15 points in the third quarter.

Lily Gentile, Somerset Berkley

Gentile paved the way with a team-high 13 points against Mt. Hope.

Abigail Sirois, Case

Sirois scored 17 points, 11 rebounds, and had four steals against Diman. She also had 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and seven steals against Somerset Berkley.

Leah Sylvain, Westport

Sylvain had a team-high 17 points against Fairhaven. She also added five steals, three assists and three rebounds.

HOCKEY

Justin Gouveia, Stang

Gouveia netted three goals in a win against against Bourne.

Quinn Pine, Stang

Pine collected three goals and an assist against Cardinal Spellman.

Ethan Laforce, Diman

LaForce netted a pair of goals against Upper Cape.

Jacob Almeida, Diman

Almeida scored two goals against Upper Cape.

Mikayla Brightman, Stang

Brightman had two goals against St. Mary's.

Davis Sullivan, Somerset Berkley

Sullivan scored four goals and had an assist in a win against Apponequet.

Lexi Yost, Stang

Yost netted two goals and two assists against Bishop Feehan.

Emily Curran, Stang

Curran finished with a pair of goals and two assists against Bishop Feehan.

SWIMMING

Benjamin Hankerson, Durfee

Hankerson was a double winner against Connolly in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Rachael Silva, Durfee

Silva qualified for the MIAA D1 state championships against Connolly with her dive score of 233.95.

INDOOR TRACK

Aidan Montag, Somerset Berkley

Montag won the 2-mile and placed second in the mile against Dighton-Rehoboth.

Matt Moreau, Somereset Berkley

Moreau won the 55 dash and placed second in the 55 hurdles.

Corryn Fisher, Somerset Berkley

Fisher was a double winner in the 55 dash and 55 hurdles against Dighton-Rehoboth.

Inez Medeiros, Diman

Medeiros was a double winner against Southeastern in the 300 (46.43) and 55 dash (7.98). She also placed third in the long jump (13’9”).
