Jack Miller and Skylar Slade are the Register's male and female Athletes of the Week
The Des Moines Register's Athletes of the Week for Jan. 23-29 have been chosen by the Register's readers.
Jesup boys basketball player Jack Miller was named Male Athlete of the Week and Southeast Polk girls wrestler Skylar Slade is the Female Athlete of the Week.
Miller defeated Ames wrestler Jabari Hinson for Male Athlete of the Week. He received 58.98% of the vote (11,992) to Hinson's 38.76% (7,880).
Miller went off for 40 points during Jesup's 91-46 victory over Oelwein in boys basketball on Friday.
Miller made 14-of-22 field goals and all nine of his shots from the line. He also had 11 rebounds with five assists and steals apiece.
Miller added 34 points, nine rebounds and four assists in an 84-36 home victory over East Marshall on Jan. 24.
Slade won Female Athlete of the Week after receiving 52.35% of the vote (4,456). West Marshall girls basketball player Katy Reyerson was runner-up in a competitive race after picking up 43.46% (3,699) of the votes.
Slade continued to mow through her competition in girls wrestling by claiming a Region 4 championship at 155 pounds Friday in Des Moines.
Slade, ranked No. 1 at 155 by IAwrestle.com, scored four pins to remain perfect on the season at 44-0. The freshman defeated Carlisle's Reagan Andersen in 41 seconds, Eddyville-Blakesberg-Fremon's Chelsea Smith in 1:12, Gilbert's Fern Neubauer in 1:55 and Pella's Emmalee Spurgeon in 58 seconds.
