Volunteers needed to ring the bell for Red Kettle campaign

Nov. 30—WORTHINGTON — With the holiday season in full swing, The Salvation Army is once again seeking individuals and groups to be volunteer bell ringers for the organization's Red Kettle campaign at three Worthington locations now through Dec. 23.

Nearly all of the funds raised through the local Red Kettle campaign stay in Nobles County, according to Bell Ringer Coordinator Cindy Harvey. Contributions are used to help people who have experienced a disaster, such as losing their home to a fire and needing to stay in a motel short-term.

"If you know a neighbor that lost a job — or you can see that they're really struggling and too proud to ask for help — (can be recommended for assistance)," Harvey said, noting that most referrals come from partnering agencies such as Nobles County Family Services and Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC).

Harvey said funds are also used to purchase winter coats for children in need, Christmas gifts and/or clothing for children if a parent has lost their income, and other necessities as they arise.

Red Kettles were moved into place at Runnings, HyVee and Fareway last Wednesday, and will remain near the front entrances of each store through Dec. 23. Bell ringers are sought to fill two-hour shifts between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Harvey encourages volunteers to dress up for their bell ringing shift, and noted that in the past, she's had volunteers come in Santa or Mrs. Claus costumes.

"Last year I had someone show up in a reindeer costume," she added with a laugh.

As in the past, volunteers are asked to register and sign up for volunteer shifts through The Salvation Army's website, registertoring.com.
