Volleyball roundup: Austin, Decatur Heritage earn splits; Hartselle sweeps Athens

Sep. 25—The Austin Black Bears split a pair of matches this week, defeating Lee-Huntsville 3-0 (25-7, 26-24, 25-3) and falling to Bob Jones 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-14) in an area match.

Against Lee-Huntsville, Jakaya Smith led Austin (11-24) with nine kills, 20 digs and one block. Aysha Thatch had seven kills and two digs and Emily Overstreet had 18 assists, three aces and two kills.

Smith had nine kills, 21 digs and four blocks to lead the Black Bears against Bob Jones. Thatch had four kills, five blocks and three digs, while Summer Sutherlin finished with 25 digs, two assists and an ace.

Decatur Heritage splits area matches

Decatur Heritage dropped a 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 15-7) match to Meek on Tuesday and rebounded to top St. Bernard 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14) on Thursday.

Genie McGhee led Decatur Heritage with 25 kills and five digs against Meek, while Alexandria Jackson had 44 assists. Ella Olive had 43 digs, and Kennedy Kyle had 27 digs.

Against St. Bernard, McGhee led the Eagles with 23 kills. Bri Tyson had seven kills and 17 digs, while Carmen Kyle added six kills. Olive finished with 32 digs, and Jackson had 44 assists.

Hartselle sweeps Athens

Jadyn Chesser had 10 kills, seven digs and four aces as Hartselle picked up a 3-0 area win over Athens on Thursday.

Kennedy Sheats had eight kills, eights digs and two aces for the Tigers, while Lydia Simmons added six kills and two aces. Katie Gillott had four kills and two digs.
