'Voice' fans in disbelief after nearly half the contestants are eliminated in one night

It's only the first week of live shows, but the top 17 was cut down to only nine remaining contestants on The Voice Tuesday night. Following Monday's live show, one contestant from each team was saved by America's votes, while a second contestant was saved by their coach.

Due to the coronavirus, Season 19 has been on the fast track with a much shorter season than usual, and Tuesday night's live results was like the red wedding of The Voice, as eight contestants were eliminated in just one night.

Yes, The Voice did also abruptly whittle the top 17 down to a top nine last May, also for coronavirus-related reasons -- the pandemic hit in the middle of Season 18, threw everything off, and forced both the contestants and coaches to work from home. But that season was a weak one, regardless. However, Season 19 is the strongest Voiceseason in recent memory, in terms of sheer talent. So, with the series kinda-sorta back to normal production, Season 19 certainly could have benefited from a more leisurely paced and protracted Playoffs rounds.

In order to round out the top nine, Team Blake's "Worth the Wait," Team Gwen's Payge Turner, Team Kelly's Tanner Gomes, and Team Legend's Bailey Rae each performed for the Wild Card spot, determined by Twitter's live instant save, and it was Team Legend who prevailed as viewers saved Bailey Rae.
