The chief of Vodafone (VOD.L) UK, Nick Jeffery, will be stepping down in February next year, and his role will be taken over by Ahmad Essam, who has served as group chief commercial operations and strategy officer at the firm since 2018.

Jeffery “has informed the company of his intention to take up a new role outside the company. He will be leaving Vodafone on 15 February 2021,” the mobile operator said in a statement.

“I want to thank Nick for his contribution to Vodafone over his many years with the company and in particular for the achievement in recent years of strengthening Vodafone UK’s position in the UK market,” said Nick Read, CEO of Vodafone Group.

Essam will become the new CEO of Vodafone UK effective 1 February and he will remain on the Vodafone Group Executive Committee.

He joined Vodafone in 1999 and has held many senior roles including CEO of Vodafone Egypt.

The company also announced that Alex Froment-Curtil will become group chief commercial officer and will join the Vodafone Group Executive Committee on 1 February, the company said.

He joined Vodafone in 2003 working at Group and in markets including CEO in Vodafone Hungary, Egypt and Turkey.

The news of Jeffrey stepping down comes a month after Vodafone Group posted that revenue for the first half of its 2021 financial year was down 2.3% year-on-year to €21.4bn ($25.4bn, £19.2bn) as the coronavirus pandemic impacted the money it makes from roaming as well as handset sales.
