Vikings coach Mike Zimmer talks about what rookie QB Kellen Mond should be learning

Minnesota surprised some people when the team took quarterback Kellen Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

The Vikings already have a presumptive starting quarterback in Kirk Cousins. Now, they’ve added a potential replacement down the road. Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer talked about what Mond should study:

“I think the biggest thing for him right now is just learning the process of the plays. Getting into the huddle, out of the huddle, calling the different plays, the different checks that we have,” Zimmer said.

Zimmer also said that he wanted Mond to be himself. There are a lot of differences in style between Cousins and Mond, especially given Mond’s mobility.

“We brought him in here as a talented, athletic quarterback,” Zimmer said. “The things that he can learn from Kirk, the way that he handles the games, the way he goes about his business in the classroom, on the field, how to work. A lot of these guys, when they come in, they don’t know how to be professionals, so part of that is in the locker room and the training room and the weight room, so I think all those types of things.”
