Vigor dominates second half of 4A championship game to defeat Oneonta 52-14 and win 4th state title

BIRMINGHAM — Vigor looked like it would be in a Super 7 battle with Oneonta in the AHSAA Class 4A state championship game Friday.

Trailing by two late in the first half, the Wolves kicked it into high gear, scoring the final 40 points en route to the fourth state title in program history at Protective Stadium. Vigor defeated Oneonta 52-14.

Oneonta (13-2) took a 14-12 lead with 2:35 left in the first half when Braden Moore hit Jexton Johnson with a 50-yard touchdown pass.

Jacori Coleman closed the first half with a rushing touchdown to put Vigor (14-1) ahead 18-14, but a missed extra point and two unsuccessful two-point conversions looked like they could come back to haunt the Wolves.

The point was moot in the second half. Vigor scored four touchdowns, including 40- and 51-yard passes by quarterback Anthony Mix.

Mix, a three-star prospect, completed 14 of 21 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns for Vigor, while Jacori Barnes and Jermaine Coleman each had two rushing touchdowns. Barnes had 111 rushing yards and Coleman finished with 52.

Caleb Coleman finished with three catches for 59 yards and a TD, and Abraham Daniels had three catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Michael Towner had an interception returned for a touchdown with just over eight minutes left for the Wolves. He added seven tackles.

Oneonta quarterback Braden Moore completed just three passes, but two of them went for scores and 74 yards. He also added 51 yards rushing.

Collin Moon finished with 60 rush yards for Oneonta and Cameron Daily led the team with 11 tackles and two pass break-ups.
