Penultimate episode of Vigil ends on suspenseful cliffhanger as one character's life hangs in the balance

Vigil upped the stakes for DCI Silva (Suranne Jones) and the rest of the submarine's crew in tonight (September 19)'s episode of the drama, with fans eagerly awaiting a new episode to see what will happen to their favourite investigator.
DCI Silva's life is hanging in the balance as episode five ended on a suspenseful cliffhanger, which fans have dubbed as "terrible/epic/horrific" as they now have to wait a week to find out whether she will survive being locked in a torpedo filing with water by the saboteur.
The latest episode ended with DCI Silva finding the chef, Jackie Hamilton (Anita Vettesse), dead from the same thing that killed Officer Craig Burke (Line of Duty's Martin Compston) in episode one. Just as she looks up, a man in a diver's mask runs at her and tackles her to the ground.
The masked man looks like Elliot Glover, the coxswain, but the question is: was he trying to hurt her or save her?

The newest episode jumped straight in to the drama, with Glover declaring an airborne hazard on the submarine so he is probably a good guy – but on Vigil, things change so fast there's no way of knowing for sure.
Fans suspected the coxswain too, with one person tweeting: "Sounds like something someone who wants me to think he doesn't want me dead would say," referring to his statement that if he wanted DCI Silva dead, he would have left her standing there.
Others are predicting that it's Captain Newsome who is responsible, using the crime drama principle of "the last person you think of" is the murderer.

Though the threat to the nuclear submarine is gripping, some fans want the story to be hurried along, with one saying: "I'm getting bored of this now. They need to either do something exciting or finish it."
Others believe that the suspension of disbelief required for this show is getting to be too much, calling the plot "laughable" and asking whether the producers consulted "anyone that's ever worked in a submarine" before.
Now that we know who the saboteur/murderer/spy is – and it's neither Glover or Newsome – we will have to wait to find out whether they will be caught and whether Vigil (and DCI Silva) will sink or swim.
