Video shows gunman shoot man next to two children in the Bronx

New York City police released a video Friday showing two children getting caught in the middle of a shooting as a gunman chased down a 24-year-old man in broad daylight in a Bronx neighborhood.

Police said the shooter opened fire, inches away from the children, around 6:45 p.m. ET Thursday in front of 1551 Sheridan Ave. as he attempted to target the 24-year-old man. The man fell on top of the kids as he struggled to runaway from the gunfire.

The 24-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds in the back and both legs. He is stable, police said.

The 10-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy, who are siblings, were near the vicinity of their home when they got trapped in the gunfire, NBC New York reported. Both children "were very fortunately not injured," New York City police tweeted.

Police are now looking for the gunman as well as a second person who they say helped him escape on a scooter.

The gunman is described as a male with sunglasses who wore all black clothing, and the second individual is described as a light-skinned male who wore a white baseball cap, a red long sleeved shirt and dark-colored shorts.

New York City police data shows that shooting incidents are up by 64 percent over the last year, with at least 634 shootings reported in the city so far this year.
