Veteran safety Eric Weddle announces retirement from Rams, NFL

After 13 seasons, three teams and six Pro Bowls, Eric Weddle is calling it quits.

The veteran NFL safety who most recently played for the Los Angeles Rams announced his retirement Thursday on Twitter.

Weddle’s legacy, ugly split in San Diego

Weddle was one of the league’s most dependable and effective safeties during his career, which he played mostly with the San Diego Chargers. A 2007 second-round pick out of Utah, Weddle played nine seasons with the Chargers before joining the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent in 2015.

His split with the Chargers was contentious, with Weddle claiming after he left San Diego that general manager Tom Telesco said he “had a lot of mileage” and treated him “like a nobody.”

Weddle thrived late in his career

Weddle went on to make three straight Pro Bowls in Baltimore after joining the Ravens at 31 years old. Weddle signed with the Rams during the 2019 offseason, where he played his final season in the NFL.

Weddle played all 16 regular season games in 10 of his NFL seasons and never played in fewer than 13.

He finishes his career with 1,179 tackles, 29 interceptions, 98 passes defended, 9.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries during the regular season.
