Fireworks safety reminders

VENTURA COUNTY — Local fire and law enforcement agencies will have extra staff on hand during the Fourth of July weekend as illegal fireworks use ramps up and wildfire risk are heightened by dry vegetation.

The Ventura County Fire Department will have extra personnel for its wildland division as well as prevention officers at fireworks shows around the county, said fire Capt. Brian McGrath.

All fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks, are illegal in all cities across the county except Fillmore, McGrath said.

Police agencies around the county have been sending out similar reminders, telling residents they can be cited or worse for setting off fireworks.

Los Padres National Forest officials also said the year-round ban on all types of fireworks on forest land would be strictly enforced during the holiday weekend.

Penalties can include a misdemeanor or felony charge, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. Violators can face jail time and fines ranging from $500 to $10,000.

McGrath said the fire department's latest vegetation analysis found below normal fuel moisture levels.

But in recent days, temperatures have been cooling down at night, he said, which has improved the fire-risk scenario.

“It’s a blessing,” McGrath said of the weather pattern.

Officials recommend residents enjoy fireworks safely by attending one of the many professional fireworks shows and other events around the county over the holiday weekend.
