Vargas-Hernandez guides No. 11 SCC to victory over Highland in men's basketball

Railer Vargas-Hernandez scored 20 points to lead 11th-ranked Southeastern Community College to an 82-64 win over Highland in a men's basketball game at Loren Walker Arena Tuesday night.

Vargas-Hernandez, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Guarenas, Venezuela, sank seven of 11 field goal attempts, including a 2-for-2 performance at 3-point range. He added six rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists. He stole the ball once.

SCC's Koby Isaac scored 14 points, hitting four of five 3-point attempts, and he had four assists and two steals. Jesiah West, who entered the game averaging 14.5 points and 9.6 rebounds, finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Jimmy Beane, Kennedy Milton and Bruce Carpenter each scored eight points for the Blackhawks.

As a team, SCC sank 30 of 61 field goal attempts, including 9-for-15 from 3-point range.

Highland was colder, making just 26 of 67 shots for 38 percent. Carlos Ramsey led the Scotties with a game-high 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Jeremy Baker scored 10 points and Stephan Gabriel added nine.

SCC (19-3) was to play Kankakee Saturday at home, but that game is canceled. Next week, the Blackhawks will square off with two ranked teams.

SCC hosts No. 13 Mineral Area Feb. 2 and No. 15 Indian Hills on Feb. 5. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. tip-offs.
