Vaccines for school children to be offered in Hazle Twp.

May 10—Children and teenagers can get vaccinations that they need for school during clinics in Hazle Twp. on consecutive Wednesdays.

The clinics are set for Wednesday and May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days at the parking lot of the Hazleton Area School Administration Building, 1515 W. 23rd St.

At the clinics, sponsored by the Wright Center for Community Health, children can receive vaccinations that Pennsylvania law requires them to have when attending school.

For kindergartners, the required vaccines protect against Hepatitis B, mumps, measles and rubella, chicken pox, polio and diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.

Seventh-graders need vaccine against meningitis and a booster against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.

High schoolers get a booster against meningitis before starting 12th grade.

Vaccines protect children against those diseases and also help prevent outbreaks in schools.

Children and teenagers from any school district can receive vaccines. Walk-ins are welcome, too, but appointments are recommended. To schedule one, call the Wright Center at 570-230-0019.

The Wright Center asks families to bring vaccination records, identification and medical insurance cards to the clinics.

No children, however, will be turned away for lack of insurance or ability to pay. The Wright Center has a sliding fee scale for eligible patients.

Wright Center also held a clinic on May 5 at Heights-Terrace Elementary/Middle School.

Using a mobile unit, the Wright Center has given 2,463 vaccines to 843 patients at clinics since March 2020.

An award of $372,000 from the U.S. Health and Human Services helped pay for the clinics.
