UT women add post player from Penn State

May 11—The Toledo women's basketball program has added another post player to its roster.

An offseason roster overhaul continued Tuesday with the addition of former Penn State forward Nan Garcia, who will have four years of eligibility.

The Puerto Rico native appeared in 13 games for the Nittany Lions last season, averaging 2.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in less than nine minutes per game. Garcia played a season-high 20 minutes and scored six points against No. 8 Maryland.

"What I love about Nan the most is how hard she competes," Rockets coach Tricia Cullop said. "She can play inside or out and has range beyond the three-point arc. She works hard for rebounds and plays through contact. We recruited Nan out of high school and knew she was a great student with strong character that would fit perfectly into our Toledo family. We are happy that after a year playing in the Big Ten and with her Puerto Rican National team she is finally a Rocket."

Garcia represented her home country at the FIBA Centrobasket U17 Women's Championships in 2019, leading Puerto Rico to a second-place finish while averaging a team-best 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds.

She starred at Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Ind., where she averaged 15.3 points per game and 7.2 rebounds during her career. Garcia earned all-state honors as a senior and was a two-time News and Tribune player of the year recipient.

She chose Penn State over Purdue, Miami (Fla.), Missouri, and Dayton.

Garcia was also a standout softball player in high school, batting .512 with nine home runs in her final high school season. But she decided to pursue basketball in college.

Garcia joins 6-foot-5 Indiana transfer Hannah Noveroske and 6-foot-2 true freshman Jessica Cook as newcomers in the post.
