The USA have been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup, beaten 3-1 by Holland.

It was a disappointing end for a rebuilt US team hoping to advance past the round of 16 for the first time since 2002. Using the second-youngest squad in the tournament, the Americans achieved the bare minimum to consider the World Cup a success, beating Iran in their group-stage finale to reach the knockout round.

But just like in 2010 against Ghana and 2014 against Belgium, the United States was eliminated in the round of 16. The Americans are winless in 12 games against European opponents at the World Cup since 2002, losing six, and are 1-7 during the tournament's knockout rounds.

"I think we made some progress," United States coach Gregg Berhalter said. "When people look at our team, they see a clear identity. They see guys that go out and fight for each other. They see the talent on the field. We made progress, but on this particular night we came up short."

USA reaction to exit

Telegraph's Washington editor, Rozina Sabur, wrote upon the USA's exit:

American football fans were left heartbroken after their defeat to the Netherlands but for many reaching the knockout stages exceeded their modest expectations.

The young team's performances in the tournament have encouraged the country's growing football fan base.

Fans in the US capital braved the rain from early in the morning for a spot in the city's crowded bars to watch their country play against the Netherlands.

The match began at 10am on the US east coast but many watch sites in Washington DC were filled to the rafters by 8am.

Washington's Astro Beer Hall opened at 6am, with fans wearing stars and stripes bandannas, and one even sporting a spangled banner jumpsuit.

British pub the Queen Vic and Across the Pond bar were also at capacity from early morning.

Dejected fans at Franklin's beer hall slowly left the bar as it became clear the US could not surmount the two-goal lead.

Meanwhile in New York, Dutch fans crowded into Hurley's Saloon near Times Square dressed in orange to celebrate.
