The US Department of Homeland Security has announced a new strategy to address the “increase in migrant encounters” at the Mexican border in Del Rio, Texas.

Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano said on September 18 there were more than 14,500 migrants gathered around the city’s International Bridge.

The majority of those were Haitian, local media said.

The DHS said its strategy consisted of six components, including sending a “surge” of 400 agents to Del Rio, and providing “additional transportation to accelerate the pace and increase the capacity of removal flights to Haiti and other destinations in the hemisphere.” Credit: Ali Bradley via Storyful
