US 35 crash causes downed power lines

Jun. 16—Residents at Maple Lane Village off of U.S. 35 near Anoka were without power for several hours following a crash on Wednesday.

Just before noon Wednesday, the driver of an Estes semi was attempting to make a home delivery when the top of the truck connected with the power lines running high above the trailer court properties. Because there was not enough clearance — even after the driver allegedly walked the area to determine distance and height — the semi pulled the lines down, causing two transformers to blow, according to Cass County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Pat Zeider.

The force of the pull also led to damage to at least one mobile home and a shed.

Logansport Municipal Utilities crews were on scene shortly after noon, shutting off power to the lines and clearing brush so they could reach sites needing repairs. Their work was expected to last the majority of the afternoon, possibly into early evening.

Comcast lines also were damaged in the accident.

Zeider said no injuries were reported.

Property manager Minnie Titus was thankful for that. After 49 years at Maple Lane, she said this is not the first time semis have tried to come through the property, causing harm.

"Semis should not be in residential areas," she said.

LMU urges people to stay away from the downed power lines. Power outages may be reported by calling LMU at (574) 753-6231.

Additional information will be added as it becomes available.
