Unsafe building and hearing authority issues demolition order on 4th Street structure

MARTINSVILLE — The Martinsville Unsafe Building and Hearing Authority voted to issue a demolition order Wednesday for a structure in the 200 block of North 4th Street.

Commissioner Tom Gray said that the owner of the property had not made good on a promise that he and his son made to repair a shed on the property, which he described as being "in a bad way."

Commissioner Dwayne Metcalf made a motion to send a demolition order, and Commissioner Mike Lanam seconded the motion.

It passed 3-0.

West Harrison Street

The authority revisited a discussion from last month's meeting about what to do with two adjoining structures in the 100 block of West Harrison Street.

During last month's meeting, the property owner requested a continuance, saying she did not have the opportunity to read the minutes of the previous meeting. She also agreed to allow city building inspectors entry into the property; however, when they attempted to enter the home on Friday, they were denied access by the owner's tenant, and the property owner was unavailable.

Gray told the property owner that if they can't gain access to the home on behalf of the tenant, they will apply for an administrative search warrant. The authority voted 3-0 to pursue that avenue.

The matter was then continued until the board's next meeting in June.

Building Inspector Bob Strader said that the property owner of a home in the 300 block of North Main Street had not made any repairs to the structure despite promising to do so at the authority's previous meeting. After conferring with the commission, Strader agreed to give the property owner 60 days to address the issue.

The authority voted to send a letter to a property owner in the 500 block of West Douglas Street that was previously asked to make repairs to the structure. The authority requested she appear at its next meeting in June.
