The United States advanced in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Who do they play next and when?

A tense second half for United States soccer fans with the men’s national team defending an eventual 1-0 victory over Iran locked up progression to the knockout phase of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

It’s the first time Team USA is heading to the Round of 16 since 2014.

Now the Stars and Stripes under Gregg Berhalter is advancing.

It came at a cost with Christian Pulisic’s game-winning goal in the first half also resulting in an injury that forced him off at the half. It was probablly the most memorable goal for the United States since Landon Donovan’s goal in the dying seconds of their final group game in 2010 against Algeria produced memorable reactions through ESPN broadcaster Ian Darke’s commentary and fan watch parties throughout America that are immortalized in YouTube videos.

So who does the U.S. play next and when?

They will face the Netherlands on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. (eastern) start.

Why?

Team USA finished as runners-up in Group B, which means they play the Group A winners. That was decided earlier Tuesday when the Dutch defeated tournament host Qatar to top Group A.

The bracket is preset with placements assigned for each group winner and runner-up into the knockout stage.

Should the United States advance to its first quarterfinal since 2002, they would take on the winner of Match 50, which is designated for the Group C winner and Group D runner-up.

Those teams won’t be known until Wednesday, when Group C and Group D wrap up their final group games.

Group C is comprised of Poland, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Mexico, while Group D features defending champion France with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia.
