Union head for deputies, correctional officers, making run for sheriff

MUNCIE, Ind. — David Williams, a sergeant with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and president of UAW Local 321, has filed to run in the Democratic primary for sheriff this spring.

As union president, Williams represented merit deputies in the county and correctional officers at the county jail. He negotiated a settlement of a grievance late last year concerning overtime for union members during the period the county building was closed due to the pandemic.

A debate among county officials over whether American Rescue Plan funds were used to settle the union grievance is expected to surface again Tuesday when the Delaware County Council meets at 9 a.m. in the county building downtown The plan, which included bonuses for other county employees as well, was tabled on Jan. 6 after questions were raised by council members.

Throughout, Williams said he was supportive of commissioners in their efforts to help county employees.

Also filing for the 2022 primary election since Jan. 14 are:

  • Incumbent Republican Jane Lasater for Delaware County Council District 4.

  • Incumbent Democrat Mary Chambers for Delaware County Council District 3.

  • Democrat Phyllis A. Lutton for the Washington Township Board.

  • Republican Brenda Ragland for Harrison Township Board.
