Underwood's single in 10th wins it for C-M softball

Jun. 15—COLFAX — Carley Underwood's batting average is on the rise. After a slow start to the season at the dish, the Tigerhawk sophomore has at least hits in four straight games.

Underwood's final hit on Monday against Keota resulted in a walk-off RBI single that sent the Tigerhawks to a 3-2 home win during South Iowa Cedar League action.

The game went 10 innings. Both teams scored once in the first, Keota (0-8 overall, 0-7 in the SICL) took a lead with another run in the fifth but Kylie Doty's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh sent the game to extra innings.

Doty, Underwood and Joslyn Chadwick each had two hits to lead the C-M offense. Doty and Underwood both had RBIs, Chadwick and Doty each doubled and Chadwick also scored one run.

Keota scored its run in the first inning with two outs. Colfax-Mingo (7-9, 6-2) answered after Chadwick doubled, Caylee Cunningham singled and Holland Robinette made it 1-0 with an RBI ground out.

The first two runners reached for C-M in the fifth and for Keota in the sixth but the game remained 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Charlotte Donahue reached on an error, moved up a base on Brennan Rhone's sacrifice bunt and then scored on Doty's RBI single.

The game went to extra innings after C-M failed to score when it had the bases loaded and no outs.

Both teams were retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings. Keota put one runner on base by error in the 10th but did not score.

In the C-M 10th, Cunningham drew a one-out walk, moved up a bag on Robinette's sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winning run on Underwood's RBI single to right field.

Cunningham finished with one hit, one run and two walks, Donahue had one hit and scored one run, Abi Rawlins tripled, Madison Stackhouse doubled and Rhone's hit was a single. Robinette also had one RBI.

The Tigerhawks finished with 11 hits and committed two errors.

Doty (7-5) went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk in 10 innings.

Doty threw 88 of her 115 pitches for strikes and tossed a first-pitch strike to 30 of the 39 batters she faced. She induced nine ground ball outs and nine fly ball outs.
