North Carolina football coach Mack Brown has agreed to a one-year contract extension that will keep him in Chapel Hill through January of 2028, the school announced Thursday.

The Tar Heels are coming off their first ACC championship appearance since 2015 after winning the league's Coastal Division title.

Here's what you need to know about Brown's extension.

  • Brown has signed a one-year contract extension for the last four years after joining the program in 2019 with a five-year deal.

  • He will be 76 in 2028 when his current contract expires.

  • The financial terms of the extension are the same as his last one-year extension, with a salary of $5 million per season.

  • Brown is in his second stint as UNC's head football coach after leading the program from 1988-97.

  • He is 30-22 in his last four seasons since returning to UNC, with four straight bowl game appearances, and he's the only active college coach who is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
