UK weather: Warning issued as heavy rain and flooding to batter UK this weekend

Flooding and heavy rain is expected in western England this weekend (PA)

The remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo will bring more wet and windy weather to the UK this weekend as the Met Office issued weather warning for heavy rain and flooding..

Lorenzo spent several hours as a Category 5 hurricane in the central Atlantic Ocean, before slipping back in force.

As a result, western parts of the UK are experiencing wet and windy weather on Friday, with south-west England expecting wind speeds of up to 50mph.

The Met Office said rain would accompany the windy weather, but said conditions would improve later in the day.

Met Office meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “Quite a windy day in south Wales and south-west England as the remnants of Storm Lorenzo move south-eastwards from Ireland, though by this stage a weak feature.

“Some rain and drizzle will accompany the wind in these parts, though it’ll turn drier later in the day.

“It’ll be brightest with some sunshine in northern Scotland, particularly the Northern Isles.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain on Sunday as the forecast for the weekend remains gloomy.

Heavy rain is expected eastern and northern parts of England, as well as southern Scotland.

The agency is warning public transport will be affected by stormy conditions, while motorists have been warned to take extra care on the roads.

Disruption to power services and the risk of flooding to businesses and homes is also likely.

And on Monday, 20mm of rain is predicted in west England and up to 40mm over sections of Wales.

The current forecast follows a damp start to October, after flood warning were put in place across large parts of England.
