Catching a ride with Uber? You may have better shot at riding in a Tesla soon

Uber on Wednesday announced a new partnership with Hertz to make 50,000 Teslas available for drivers with the platform to rent.

Drivers in the United States will be able to rent the fully electric Teslas by 2023, Uber confirmed in a statement obtained by USA TODAY. But, beginning on Nov. 1, drivers can rent the cars in four cities across the country – Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington.

The ride share platform explained that most drivers who use Uber own their car, but some drivers rent a vehicle. Uber has offered rental options for drivers through Hertz since 2016.

Tesla rentals will begin at $334 per week for drivers and decrease to $299 or lower as the program continues, according to Uber. That includes insurance and maintenance for the vehicles.

Uber in the statement touted that drivers will reduce their environmental impact by switching to electric vehicles and save on gasoline costs.
