The U.S. buying Greenland: Joke or genius?

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump had floated several times the prospect of the U.S. buying the self-governing Danish territory of Greenland. It’s not the first time a U.S. president has considered buying it. The Truman administration offered the Danes $100 million in gold and potentially part of Alaska for the island in 1946. In response to reports of American interest, Greenland's Foreign Ministry tweeted it was "open for business, not for sale." Denmark's prime minister called the idea "absurd."
